Rostec to supply composite aggregates for M?-21

Rostec will start serial production of large carbon fiber composite parts for fin boxes and a stabilizer for the M?-21 airliner. The Corporation will start serial production of composite aggregates in November 2017 and is to complete the first five airliners before the end of 2018.

The contract provides for production of sets of large carbon fiber composite parts for fin boxes and a stabilizer for the Russian M?-21 airliner and their delivery to a customer. An agreement on the production of composite parts was signed by Obninsk Research and Production Enterprise Technologiya named after A.G. Romashin (part of the holding company RT-Chemcomposite) on the part of Rostec and by Irkut Corporation on the part of UAC. The project implementation will enable the enterprise forming part of Rostec to increase the share of civilian products.

"Parts of the empennage which have been produced successfully underwent static and dynamic tests. Our enterprise is all ready to start serial production of the aggregates for MS-21. Obninsk Research and Production Enterprise Technologiya named after A.G. Romashin will start the serial production of composite aggregates for the airliner in November 2017 and is to complete the first five airliners before the end of 2018," said Sergey Abramov, Industrial Director of Rostec Weapons cluster.

As part of cooperation in creating the airliner, Rostec's enterprise has developed a technology for producing power parts for fin boxes and a stabilizer of polymer composite materials with an extensive use of automated technologies for layup and shaping of prepreg layers. The start of serial production will involve the capabilities of new equipment. Due to the project implementation, the share of civilian products made by the enterprise will increase by 3-5%, which will have a positive impact on the Strategy implementation in Rostec Weapons cluster.

The carbon fiber composite parts for the "Magistral aircraft of the XXI century" will be produced in an upgraded production space with state-of-the-art equipment, such as a unique facility for automated prepreg layup which has no analogues in Russia. The facility allows making large products for prospective aviation equipment using Russian materials.

Readiness of Obninsk Research and Production Enterprise Technologiya named after A.G. Romashin for serial production of high-tech products for the new generation of aviation equipment has been confirmed by experts of Bureau Veritas, a global leader in certification. Obninsk Research and Production Enterprise Technologiya named after A.G. Romashin is among the Russian enterprises which have been the first ones to receive a certificate of conformity of the quality management system with the latest international AS/EN 9100:2016 quality management standard for the aerospace industry.
