Wärtsilä wins Gold and Bronze Medals at Asian Power Awards 2019 event

Technology group Wärtsilä together with its consortium partner PT PP have been awarded both Gold and Bronze medals at the Asian Power Awards 2019 event held in conjunction with the Powergen Asia 2019 conference and exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The prestigious awards event is often referred to as the power industry’s Oscars, and in recognising Wärtsilä’s accomplishments, these Awards represent a strong endorsement of the company’s technology and its overall project performance. The Gold Medal award was given in the “Best Dual-Fuel Power Plant of the Year” category, while the Bronze Medal award was for the “Fast Track Project of the Year”.

The Package 7 project — Both awards are in recognition of the Package 7 project in eastern Indonesia. This involved Wärtsilä’s delivery of four power plants to Indonesia, constructed simultaneously in partnership with PT PP for the account of PT PLN, the Indonesian state-owned national utility. All four plants operate on Wärtsilä 34DF dual-fuel engines and have power outputs ranging from 22 to 36 MW. The order was placed in March 2017.

The dual-fuel flexibility of the Wärtsilä engines was an extremely important feature of the project, since they can operate on conventional liquid fuel until the LNG supply infrastructure serving the sites is in place. The plants will then switch to LNG fuel operation.

In accepting the Gold Medal award, Nicolas Leong, Regional Director, South East Asia, Wärtsilä Energy Business, commented: “Flexibility, both operational and in fuel choice, is the one word that best defines today’s energy sector transition. When Wärtsilä introduced dual-fuel engine technology some 25 years ago, we opened the door to a new era of power generation. As the industry moves away from large centralised power plants with inflexible thermal capacity, to fast-starting, highly efficient, fuel flexible systems, we are able to utilise greater levels of renewably sourced energy, notably solar and wind. This will benefit the environment, the power producers, and society in general. Wärtsilä is proud to receive this Gold Medal, and proud to be leading the energy sector’s transition towards a 100 percent renewables energy future.”

Fast-Track deliveries — Execution speed of the Package 7 project was demanding. PT PLN is committed to rapidly increasing its electrification network in eastern Indonesia where the four power plants, at Bontang, Labuan Bajo, Nabire and Ternate, are located. The contracts with Wärtsilä therefore specified fast-track deliveries, and Wärtsilä was able to respond accordingly. Two of the plants were completed in just six months, one was ready in nine months, and the fourth was completed within a year.

This outstanding performance emphasises the company’s project management capabilities. As Frederic Carron noted when accepting the award: “Wärtsilä’s 30 years of experience in delivering complex projects to customers around the world was the rock on which this Package 7 project was successfully built. We support our installations not only through this experience, but also through commitment to the customer, through deep in-house know-how, and through having a global network of capable and well-trained personnel. As a result, we are extremely well placed to deliver both EPC and equipment delivery contracts.”

These four power plant installations add to the 3500 MW installed capacity that Wärtsilä already has in Indonesia. Wärtsilä also has service agreements covering more than 350 MW of generating capacity in the country.
